I got hacked

I go to my site in the morning and what do i see, a blank page with the phrase at the top “Defaced by R@Mi”. You never believe this will ever happen to your site, until one day it does.

The first thing that came to my mind, was the infamous email backups of the wp-db-backup plugin. This plugin is a life saver.

The damage was not that big, the hacker renamed my original index.php to index.php.wpau.bak, and replaced it with his own file. Nothing else was damaged.

Although the renamed filename points to the “Wordpress Automatic upgrade” plugin, index.php.wpau.bak, i can’t be sure that this plugin is the problem, maybe the hacker tries to distract the attention.

The versions i was using were WP 2.5.1 and “Wordpress Automatic upgrade” 1.2.1

Needless to say i upgraded both of them, WP to 2.6.1 and “Wordpress Automatic upgrade” to 1.2.2

Nothing i can do but wait and see..

I removed Bidvertiser

I never had much luck with Bidvertiser. Except for some clicks i got when i first installed the code, i never had a single click again.

The major disadvantages about this service are:
- You can’t see the ads that your visitors click, how are you supposed to optimize the ad-space ?
- It is too damn expensive because of spam-ads. No room for decent sites.

Especially now that Google released “Adsense For Feeds”, it’s very hard to compete. I’ll still use the feed-ads though, until Google migrates my feedburner account.

Categorized CPM is the future of online advertising

First of all we should define what online advertising is. Online advertising is CPM advertising, which means cost per 1000 impressions. Those who have the most money to spent on advertising, are the ones who have the most resources, and therefore the ones who deserve most of our attention.

The main problem of the existing advertising networks with the CPM model, is that you can only target a single site. This makes CPM advertising almost impossible to handle.

As a result, we use CPC (cost per click), which has the advantage of targeting automatically thousands of sites.

The solution to this problem is to use a system where the advertiser will be able to target a lot of sites using the CPM model.

This system can be done very easily by using a directory structure. Each publisher will submit his site in the appropriate category/subcategory and the advertiser will be able to advertise on all sites under the category and its subcategories.

The network will show the CPM ad through several sites and charge you for it. Just like the CPC system does, except that it charges for clicks, not impressions. I won’t go further into how this system should work, I’m sure those who will decide to build such a network, will know what to do.

The point is that this way the network can serve relevant ads, even more relevant than the best contextual networks.

For example, suppose there is network with a category named “Make Money Blogs” and inside this category there are over 600 blogs. Advertising on all these blogs with a single CPM campaign, would be a great thing.

You might ask, why not use the same directory-based system using the CPC model ?
The answer is simple. The CPM model forces advertisers to create better quality ads. If they don’t, they will pay for every unproductive ad impression.

With the CPC model, advertisers can create and run campaigns with low CTR. Although the network will eventually lower these campaigns exposure, the damage has already been done. Advertisers have nothing to lose.

Another advantage of the CPM model, is that it’s extremely difficult for someone to cheat. The cheater must access the page many times, because of the low cost per impression. On the other hand a click can occur after only a few ad impressions.

Finally the CPM model raises the quality of the advertised sites, since they will have to worth the money spent for every impression. A very common problem of the CPC model, is the fact that black-hat sites (such as email-harvesters, installers, etc) can pay a high price per click, a price that a regular site cannot pay.

Therefore low quality sites appear on the top spots of the ad units, which are not attractive to most visitors, except to very few. Black-hat sites eventually get their advertising, publishers lose big money because of the low number of clicks to low quality ads, and nobody can do anything about it. Even if an advertising network decides to not allow black-hat sites, it is very difficult to do so, because they can take various forms and appear like regular sites/services.

The only solution to this problem, with minimal network administration burden, is the CPM model. Black-hat sites will not vanish, but they will take the position in the ad units they deserve. And this can make a huge difference in publishers/advertisers/networks earnings.

ePayment:
One of the most important features on an advertising network, is to accept from advertisers and pay to publishers, with an e-payment service. Something that many, mainstream advertising network owners don’t know, is the importance of using ePassporte. ePassporte is the only service, at least from what i know, that allows all people worldwide to open an account and get a virtual VISA credit card.

There are a lot of networks out there, that use different e-payment services from what the users may have, not to mention the ones that don’t use one at all (Adwords, Adbrite..). This means that many times, you need to either use a credit card or the virtual VISA account from ePassporte.

There are also a lot of young people using their parents credit cards. It’s one thing to use a credit card for verification and another thing to charge money on it for advertising. It’s not nice to make money on advertising and get paid with paypal or check, while you need a credit card to advertise on AdWords or Adbrite.

Plus it is safer to use online the virtual VISA account number, than the regular cc number. Less problems if something ever happens.

ePassporte also allows transactions with adult sites, expanding even more the reach on webmasters.

Now that i made clear why ePassporte must be the standard option for e-payment on advertising networks, lets see about the backup option. We always need to have a backup option, don’t we ?
I think the best one is Paypal. A lot of people use it, like it, it’s a problem for adult webmasters but nevertheless good as a backup.

Now what ?
Now we wait until someone build this thing.

Notepad has an “Undo” function. Now this is good stuff..

and definitely worth posting about.

I can’t remember how many times i had to rewrite stuff in notepad just because i never thought there was this function available.

I’m no Sherlock Holmes, that’s for sure.

How to edit the permalink while in draft, the easy way

Suppose that while you write the title of your post, Auto-save kicks in and saves your unfinished post title as the permalink.

To edit it to the correct title, edit and delete the unfinished permalink title, then click to save the (blank) permalink. Since the field is blank, WP will use the post’s title again for the new permalink.

Blogger problems / bugs

Alternate title: Blogger sucks hairy balls

So i decided to start my make-money blog. I didn’t want to buy a new domain for this project, at least not until it starts showing some signs of success.
I signed up with blogger, since the free hosted version of WP (wordpress.com) doesn’t allow you to place advertisements.

To tell you the truth, i always thought blogger was the not-so-feature-rich but robust platform. I was wrong.

I did manage to write the first two posts in blogger, the third one “List of all advertising networks” had the misfortune of containing html tables and blogger doesn’t like tables.

Some of the problems i can remember were: inserting a big space within two tables, some tables were missing the left border, the first line of my post was becoming the second line of the toolbar, inserting a big space between my posts title and the first table, messing up the tables entirely, adding a blogger-url before the urls of my links (WTF?), when previewing the post is was completely messed up..

Also, one of the most annoying things about blogger, is that you can’t make a change and stay in the edit page, like the “Save and continue editing” of WP.

Well no more, i bought the fucking domain, installed WordPress and i’m done.

This is a list of all the major advertising networks along with some important info about them.

Best internet music station - hands down

I am working right now and i just started hearing this station about half an hour ago. Simply the best station i have ever heard.

AOL Radio -> Radio -> Stations -> Pop -> Party hits

Don’t miss this one.

Keep in mind there are also some interesting “All Michael Jackson/Madonna/Metallica” stations.

Enjoy

Starting my new sites.

I tried a lot of different sites (all adult), they all failed. All the million (if not billion) dollars ideas i had, proved to be nothing more than complete failures.

After all these years of being a webmaster, i now know that if you want to succeed on this biz, you either got to have money for advertising or make a bla-bla site.

Bla-bla site, is a site with unique text content such as a blog or a forum.
This is the only kind of site that will receive the necessary starting traffic, for free, from the search engines (SE).

So, here i am now, starting not only one but two bla-bla sites, something that i never thought i would do because of my bad english.

The first site is not really a new idea, it is a combination of a blog and a forum for my hobby. I had this idea for a long time, but i was too busy trying to make millions from the “good” projects. The projects that the humanity really “needs” and of course is willing to pay for..
The blog (wordpress) is installed on root and plays the role of vBAdvanced lame edition. The forum (myBB) is on a subcategory and of course plays the role of vBulletin (guess the edition).

The second site is the one you see right now. A make money blog, or a webmaster blog if you like, in which I’ll write all the things that i go through as a webmaster.
Since i have to deal with these things daily, why not try to make some money out of it? (plus the fear I’ll screw up the hobby-project as well, you never know)

I decided not to reveal my hobby-site because i don’t want to be affected from this blogs traffic. I think it’s better this way.

Well, this is my first post in a bla-bla site, it is supposed to be crawled by SEs and get lots of adsense clicks right?
Since all my previous sites were porn related, i never got to use adsense. Finally I’ll see how much a text post can make from SE traffic and all the other social/bookmark stuff, cause i have been hearing a lot..

I’m ready SEs, crawl all over me.
